Hidden away in the quaint village of Shreve, Ohio, is an Amish family restaurant — Des Dutch Essenhaus. From the outside, you may wonder if there will even be enough seating for your family, but inside there are several dining rooms and many tables and booths to choose from. The cozy, fire-side dining area makes a nice spot to eat your dinner, but the highlight of our meal was the dine-in Amish buggy booth. It’s a real Amish buggy that has a table in it. Our girls liked it (but they were a little scared, too). I wondered if there would be much competition for the buggy booth, but it wasn’t too busy on a Monday night so we were privileged with the experience.
The booths are long and large so you don’t feel like you have to stuff your body into a match box while you eat like some places. Now for the food. It was Monday evening when we visited and the special for the day was broasted chicken with one side and the soup and salad bar. And the salad bar is also in a wagon. What will they think of next? The menu had a lot of choices. You can even choose a family style meal if everyone at your table is planning to eat family style. The chicken was good, and they would give you all you can eat for the special. I could only eat two pieces. The kids did not eat very well. Next time we will just feed them the free bread (little loaves brought to the table). They might consider a kid’s play area with some Amish toys and such. Or maybe some crayons and pictures to color. There is a store with homemade baked goods and other homemade items.
